Biography
1991 — 1994
The Duo Years
The duo's first record, the All Souled Out EP, arrived on Elektra in 1991. Their debut album, Mecca and the Soul Brother, followed in 1992 and carried "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," written in memory of Troy Dixon of Heavy D & The Boyz. It remains one of the most recognized records in hip-hop and is still the reason his name opens doors three decades later. The Main Ingredient, released in 1994, closed the duo's original run.
1991 — All Souled Out
The first record. Six tracks that set out the terms — Pete Rock's horn-led loops under a writer who had already found his cadence.
1992 — Mecca and the Soul Brother
The debut album, and the one that carries 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' — written for the late Trouble T Roy.
1994 — The Main Ingredient
The second album. Warmer, looser, and more assured than the debut — the sound of a duo with nothing left to prove.

2006 — Now
The Solo Years
His solo work began with American Me in 2006, followed by The Outsider in 2007 and the Ground Zero compilation in 2008. After a stretch spent performing rather than recording, he returned with Rhythm and Blues in 2022 and has released steadily since — It's Magic and The Golden Rule in 2023, then Da Odd Couple and Since the Day in 2024, the latter produced by DJ Premier with Mike Epps.
2006 — American Me
The first solo album. Written without a fixed producer at his shoulder, and the clearest statement of what he sounds like alone.
2022 — Rhythm and Blues
A return to release after a long stretch spent performing rather than recording.
2024 — Since the Day
Produced by DJ Premier, with Mike Epps. Two names that do not appear on a record casually.

The Circle
Who He's Recorded With
Across that catalog he has recorded and shared stages with Mary J. Blige, Raekwon, Run DMC, Teddy Riley, Heavy D, Faith Evans, Johnny Gill, Michael Bivins, BJ the Chicago Kid, Skyzoo, Spice 1, and the late Japanese producer Nujabes — a range that runs from new jack swing through boom bap to the lo-fi lineage Nujabes set in motion.
